Phinney wins third national title of week

Taylor Phinney set a track record Friday in the men’s 4,000-meter individual pursuit at the USA Cycling Elite Track National Championships in Carson, Calif. For Phinney, from Boulder, Colo., it was his third national title of the week, the others coming in the kilometer time trial and team pursuit.

His qualifying time of 4:23.514 broke the record at the ADT Event Center velodrome at the Home Depot Center. He beat Daniel Harm of Seattle in the finals for his second consecutive elite title in individual pursuit. Julian Kyer of Lyons, Colo., took third. Fourth-placer Daniel Lionberg of Fort Collins, Colo., took the U23 national title.

Kimberly Geist, 18, from Emmaus, Pa., captured the women’s 3,000-meter individual pursuit in 3:52.826. Alison Powers of Boulder, Colo., took second, with Shannon Koch of Flower Mound, Texas, third.

Other winners included Daniel Holloway (Boulder, Colo.) in the men’s scratch race; Shelly Olds (Los Gatos, Calif.) in the women’s scratch; Jimmy Watkins (Bakersfield, Calif.) in men’s sprint; and Cari Higgins (Boulder, Colo.) in women’s Keirin.
